How to prepare your MacBook for Apple Trade In

Before you return your MacBook

Back up your data.

If you need help transferring data, schedule an appointment at an Apple Authorized Service Provider or an Apple Store. It is your sole responsibility to back up all existing data, software, and/or programs from your product. Apple and The BuyBack Platform is not responsible for loss, recovery, or compromise of data, software, or programs on your trade-in product.

Sign out of iCloud on your Mac

In macOS Ventura or later:

  1. Choose Apple menu  > System Settings.

  2. Click your name.

  3. Click Sign Out.

Turn off your firmware password (if enabled)

How to turn off a firmware password

  1. Start up from macOS Recovery. During startup, you will be prompted to enter the firmware password.

  2. When the utilities window appears, click Utilities in the menu bar, then choose Startup Security Utility or Firmware Password Utility.

  3. Click Turn Off Firmware Password.

  4. Enter the firmware password again when prompted.

  5. Quit the utility, then choose Apple menu  > Restart.

  6. Erase your hard disk.

Remove all non-charging accessories. If additional accessories are included in the return, they will recycled and cannot be returned to you.
